ACSS 4.0 support is now available in Brixies! 🎉

Added: ACSS 3.x & 4.0 Version Support

With the official release of Automatic.css 4.0, we’ve updated Brixies to support both ACSS 3.x and ACSS 4.0.

You can now choose which version of ACSS you’re using directly from your Brixies Account Settings. This ensures that the layouts you copy or rename from Brixies use the appropriate variables for your version of ACSS.

Why are we supporting both ACSS 3.x and ACSS 4.0?

ACSS 4.0 introduces significant changes compared to ACSS 3.x, including changes to variables and the way certain parts of the framework are configured.

At the same time, many Brixies users are still using ACSS 3.x or continue to use its variables in existing Bricks websites.

For this reason, instead of replacing our existing ACSS 3.x layouts, we’ve decided to support both versions independently. This allows you to continue working with existing ACSS 3.x projects without being affected by the transition to ACSS 4.0.

Using Brixies with ACSS 4.0

If you select ACSS 4.0 in your Brixies Account Settings, we recommend importing our ACSS 4.0 configuration into Automatic.css before using the layouts.

This is important because ACSS 4.0 has removed or disabled by default several variables that were previously available and used throughout Brixies layouts.

These can include:

  • Radius variables
  • Neutral color variables and their variations
  • Transparency variables
  • Other variables required by some Brixies layouts

Importing the provided configuration ensures that the variables expected by our ACSS 4.0 layouts are available in your project.

Bricks Theme Styles

We also provide the Bricks Theme Styles used with our ACSS 4.0 setup.

Importing these Theme Styles is optional. However, if you want a copied or renamed Brixies layout to look as close as possible to the original design shown in our library, we recommend importing them.

You can then customize these Theme Styles and variables to match your own project’s design system.

Important: ACSS 3.x and ACSS 4.0 are not interchangeable

ACSS 3.x and ACSS 4.0 should be treated as separate systems.

As also explained by the Automatic.css team within their official community, ACSS 4.0 introduces substantial changes and should not be considered directly interchangeable with layouts built around the ACSS 3.x system.

For example, if your website is configured for ACSS 4.0 but you copy a Brixies layout generated for ACSS 3.x, some layouts may appear correctly while others may have missing or broken styles due to differences in variables and framework configuration.

The same principle applies in the opposite direction.

For this reason, always make sure that the ACSS version selected in Brixies matches the ACSS version you’re using on your website.

Where can I change my ACSS version?

You can select your version from:

Brixies Account → Account Settings → Automatic.css Version

Then select the version you’re currently using:

  • ACSS 3.x
  • ACSS 4.0

Once selected, Brixies will provide the appropriate version of our ACSS layouts when you copy or rename them.

Getting Started with ACSS 4.0

We’ve also updated our Getting Started page with videos showing you how to:

  • Import the recommended ACSS 4.0 configuration
  • Import the optional Bricks Theme Styles
  • Prepare your Bricks website before using Brixies layouts with ACSS 4.0

If you’re starting a new project with ACSS 4.0, we strongly recommend following these steps before copying your first Brixies layout.

Existing ACSS 3.x projects can continue using the ACSS 3.x option as before.

This approach allows us to support the transition to ACSS 4.0 while ensuring that existing Brixies projects built with ACSS 3.x can continue working without disruption.
